Camp Hale was founded over 100 years
ago in the summer of 1900 on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. The
Camp Hale Alumni Association was founded in 1925. This version
of CHAA did not have an incorporated status. In 1952, a second
Alumni group, named the Camp Hale Council, Inc. (CHC), was founded.
In 1987 CHAA and CHC merged to form the Camp Hale Alumni Association,
Inc.
CHAA is comprised of several generations of people who recognize
the impact that Camp Hale has had not only in their lives, but also
in the lives of those who experience Camp Hale. This group
is truly multi-generational and includes former campers, staff members,
family, and friends of Camp Hale. To get a good idea of the
people involved in the Alumni Association, plan on attending the
next Alumni Weekend festivities held every
year in August.
CHAA efforts to see Camp Hale continue for another 100 years include
activities like holding fundraiser's, sponsoring campers, donating
needed assets to Camp, and staying in touch with the present day
activities of Camp. Every year members of the Alumni Association
volunteer their time to camp related activities. These activities
include our successful Work Weekend, where CHAA members converge
on Camp for a weekend of prep work that includes preparing the waterfront,
opening up the cabins, and repairing any of Mother Nature's winter
wear and tear. Alumni members have also been known to visit
camp during the camping season, sharing their camp stories with
the campers and staff or joining a cabin group on a mountain climb.
CHAA is about maintaining a bridge between the past, the present,
and the future. CHAA is about giving back so others can experience
the same memories that drive the alumni members back year after
year after year.
CHAA is about Camp Hale.

Camp Hale is owned and
operated by the United
South End Settlements ( U.S.E.S. ), an organization that provides
comprehensive programs that address the needs of individuals and
families in the Boston area. Camp Hale, located in the mountains
of New Hampshire on beautiful Squam Lake, has provided residential
camping experiences for lower-income boys from the South End and
Lower Roxbury since 1900. The Camp Hale environment fosters individual
development through outdoor programs and education. As they have
for over 100 years, young boys at Camp Hale enjoy swimming and nature
study along with overnight canoeing and hiking trips that offer
opportunities for learning and team building. At Camp Hale, young
boys from the inner city develop an enhanced sense of well-being,
improved social skills, and increased awareness of their personal
potential that will stay with them long into the future. Every summer,
about 120 young boys participate in Camp Hale.
At Camp Hale, our goal is for each boy to leave Camp
with an enhanced sense of well being, improved social skills and
awareness of personal potential. These benefits stay with children
well into the future and yield dividends in other endeavors such
as school, work, sports, conflict resolution skills and interpersonal
relations.
