In Memory of Antonio Hansell

Antonio Hansel was a camper at Camp Hale in the summer of 2004. Antonio and his cabin group were on a hike up Doublehead Mountain when they spotted a bear in the woods. Antonio became frightened and ran. Tragically he collapsed and died of respiratory failure. News reports indicate that the cabin group headed in the opposite direction once the bear was spotted. The bear did not run after any campers.

In tribute to Antonio, the campers and staff banded together, designing the rocks you see below. They were placed along the path down to Leaders Point during a Council Ring fire dedicated to Antonio. The rocks are flavored with the individual styles and messages of the designers, and are a sight to see as you walk down the path.

The Camp Hale Alumni Association wishes to extend its deepest condolences to the Hansell family.

An update from Tom Roberts
I have just returned from camp. The kids and staff are doing well. We had the gate manned for two days to keep reporters and the media out. The Town of Sandwich has reached out with many of them swinging by the gate giving love and support. You would be touched by all the local folks caring for camp. They see camp as their community as well and are more than willing to do anything to help. From our immediate neighbors on Squam to the Sandwich store, to North Sandwich residents, very touching and loving people. Tom
