From Nick Haddad -
Rest in peace, Mr. Will.
Will and I started working together at Camp Hale in 1984, and I'm
quite sure he was there for at least part of every summer until
I retired in 1994. He may have worked with Carmen before 1982, and
with others after 1994, and I know he was also a camper. Once his
job kept him from having summers available to return to camp, Will
started using his summer vacation to volunteer at camp in August,
working in the cabins, helping prepare the softball team for the
big game, and helping haul in the docks and boats when the season
ended.
While I'm sure I thanked him for his contributions, I know I never
adequately conveyed to him how much of a difference his wonderful
presence made to the campers, to the staff, and to the whole camp
operation. It brightened my day just to see him arrive in camp.
Will taught in the boating program, lead trips, and worked with
the ball team, but in every aspect of camp, he was great with the
kids...patient,thoughtful, hard-working, caring, quick to laugh
(I can hear his laugh so clearly...), reliable, responsible, mature...
the kind of counselor every camp needs, and no camp has enough of.
The next time someone adds a few chapters to the Camp Hale history
book, let there be a place to record the contributions of Wilbur
Jackson, who made a difference.
Nick Haddad
------------------------------------
Fellow Camp Haler's,
I would like to add to the growing sympathy for our brother "
Big " Wilbur. As Mr.Nick said, Will pooled his vacation, and
used it all at camp, not that that is a bad thing, but that shows
his love for Camp. I had the pleasure of knowing Will, for a long
time. I served with Will as a co-counselor in the second trip 1990
Owls cabin. We did an awesome overnight to Black Mountain Pond,
climbing Black Mountain, and Sandwich Dome the next day( I will
write about this trip in the next newsletter). We took a life guarding
course together at the Blackstone, under Chris Cato, along with
Tommy Roberts, and I cant remember who else, but there was a few
of us, and I had to save Will during the practical( In water).
We had a flu outbreak in our cabin and took turns mopping up puke
in the dark of the night. We stayed at camp in October during a
Sandwich fair. Will had the patience, was kind, loving, and a pleasure
to know. Mr.Will, thanks for our time together at camp, I am a better
person having known you, and I cant believe you are gone.
God Bless Wilbur Jackson and his family
Respectfully,
Bobby Nicholas

It is with great regret that I inform CHAA members, but this morning

but at the same time I know he'll always be watching down. Going
to camp with him has left me with so many priceless memories, and
we will truly miss him.

Sad news for the Camp Hale tribe. Dick Pieri has passed away.
Dick was one of the colorful counselors of the 1950's, and of course
worked at camp for decades as Program Director. He was also one
of the founders of the Camp Hale Council which preceded CHAA.
Dick was the second member of a three generation Camp Hale family.
He spent 26 years on the Camp Hale staff, working most of those
years as a Counselor and Program Director. He holds the world record
for telling the story of Chief John at the Council Ring and for
making PB&J sandwiches that were consumed on mountain trails
or on the islands of Squam Lake.
Mr. Dick Pieri, Chief John welcomes you with arms wide!
To post a message and/or your memories of Dick
please use the CHAA
Discussion Board, or, send your message to webmaster@camphalealumni.org
and I'll post them directly to the web site.

In memory of ...
Paul Tisbert
"A very good friend of CHAA has just passed away.
He was a beloved member of the "Methuen Crew", volunteering
his time on the raking crew during work weekend for well over 20
years. His name is Paul Tisbert. Camp Hale was the highlight of
his year, and he never missed a year with his crew. No matter how
bad the weathers was, he was always there to make you smile. He
always did the best job he could for Camp Hale, with never a want
for thanks. Maybe a want for extra roast beef at dinner, but not
for thanks, lol.
Paul was like the Rodney Dangerfield of the group.
Truly the funniest and most heart felt person I know. Paul was always
the life of the party. When you felt down, he was always there to
give his whacked out view of life to help raise your spirits. No
matter how insane he sounded, you could not help but laugh, and
realize that things were not really that bad. Paul also had a huge
heart. He touched the hearts of all the people lucky enough to know
him. He is deeply missed by myself, family, and all his friends.
Camp will be forever different from now on, because Paul won't be
there."
Mark Gaznick
In
memory of ...
Dick Stack
Dick was a Camp Haler in the 40's, 50's and 90's
and recently passed away from a heart attack. Those of you who recall
the war canoe "Big Red" should know that it was covered
with fiberglass largely through his efforts. The children are with
Dot in Florida.
Dick lived his life with no looking back at what
might have been. May he rest in peace.
Regards, Paul.
